Buro 24/7 Exclusive Interview: Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture SS14 backstage
A truly unique collection, and the designers behind it
Tell us about the thought process behind this collection...
This collection was the erosion of boundaries between a woman and her clothes. All dresses have been made of latex to therefore feel like a second skin. Plus, we are releasing a new fragrance called 'BonBon', and this is a launch that also fits perfectly into the concept. After all, before you put on the dress, the woman applies her perfume – we wanted to really explore this idea.

How did you select models for the show?
Well, movement was an important element of the collection, so we decided not to use traditional models and instead selected professional dancers from the National Ballet of the Netherlands. They flew to Paris specifically for our show, and we were very pleased to work with such talented compatriots.
Do you prefer to work back in The Netherlands?
Of course Paris is our 'fashion home', where we show all collections, but we love to go back home to Holland. There you can really focus on the job, for us it is a very peaceful and inspiring place.

"ALTHOUGH WE HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER FOR 20 YEARS, EACH SEASON TEACHES US SOMETHING NEW"

You frequently use very alternative fabrication for your collections. How do you make it wearable?
As we mentioned, this time we decided to work with latex, but made it absolutely wearable in its cut – this is done via simple dress silhouettes, playing up the idea of clothing as a second skin. So to create an outfit using any thing from this collection means simply picking out cute shoes.

This year you are celebrating the staggering twentieth anniversary of your fashion label. What has changed during that time?
Although we have been working together for over 20 years now, each season teaches us something new. And it's still as exciting as at the beginning...
