Happy Birthday Marc Jacobs
The fashion icon turns 51
Born in New York city in 1963, Marc Jacobs spent much of his early life moving from place to place following the death of his father and subsequent marriages of his mother – as a teenager, he actually lived with his paternal grandmother, whom he has credited as being one of his greatest influences. "I always say I lived my life with my grandmother," he told New York Magazine in 2005. "She was emotionally stable, and she was very encouraging to me."
- After graduating from the High School of Art and Design in 1981, he studied at the world-famous Parsons School of Design. In his last year he was awarded three of the school's highest honours, thanks to his graduate collection of Op-Art sweaters hand-knitted by his grandmother. At his graduate show, the sweaters attracted much attention, including that of Barbara Weiser, owner of New York's Charivari boutique, who subsequently placed an order for them to be professionally produced and sold in her boutique under the label Marc Jacobs for Marc and Barbara... And a star of the style industry was born. Fast forward over three decades and Jacobs has quite literally transformed the face of fashion as we know it, having spent time at the helm of Louis Vuitton before passing the reins to Nicolas Ghesquière and, of course, his own revolutionary label. Buro 24/7 Middle East celebrates his birthday with some key quotes:
“I like people who have a sense of individuality. I love expression and anything awkward and imperfect, because that’s natural and that’s real.”
“I always find beauty in things that are odd & imperfect – they are much more interesting.”
“Innovation is an evolutionary process, so it's not necessary to be radical all the time.”
“It's the things that aren't accepted as conventionally beautiful that I find more attractive.”
“One thing that is exciting about fashion is the surprise element. People don't know what they want. They just know when they see it.”
"To me, clothing is a form of self-expression – there are hints about who you are in what you wear."
Happy Birthday Marc Jacobs!
