Girl of the week: Kendall Jenner
Proving people wrong
Who could possibly have imagined this time last year that a member of the Kardashian clan would be cast in some of the fashion industry's most important shows of the season for Autumn/Winter 14?
In perhaps one of the most unlikely stories to emerge from the past four weeks of catwalks across New York, London, Milan and Paris, Kendall Jenner has proved to hold herself as an authentic model with poise and professionalism. Having dabbled in a couple of low key NYFW shows last season, this year has been the first time that any major labels have selected the reality TV star to walk, the first being arguably one of the biggest events on the stateside circuit, Marc Jacobs.
Cue London Fashion Week, where Jenner blended in quite simply, practically going unnoticed bar for a stint guest editing the LOVE magazine Instagram account with the hashtag #kendalltakesover, after being invited personally to do so by Editor-in-Chief Katie Grand (incidentally, also the casting director for Marc Jacobs). Oh, and she was cast at Giles before perching next to Anna Wintour on the Topshop Unique front row for good measure – something the 18-year-old referred to as a "dream come true."
On the subject of dreams – Paris followed her London calling, when she was invited by Riccardo Tisci – a designer well documented to be good friends with older sister Kim Kardashian and fiancé Kanye West – to walk for Givenchy. But the real pièce de résistance? Karl Lagerfeld's acceptance on the Chanel Autumn/Winter 14 runway (slash supermarket aisle).
It would be a mistake, however, to assume that Jenner's recognition has come about due to her family connections. In fact, according to the New York Times she, "actually has the raw material. Big doe eyes, shiny dark hair and full lips. She is 5 feet 10 inches, very slender and very leggy. She has a real shot." And it's worth remembering that other once 'new faces', Georgia May Jagger and Cara Delevingne come from rather famous families too.
And so with her very, very many followers – more than 7 million on Twitter and nearly 9 million thanks to Instagram, Kendall Jenner is turning her model aspirations into something tangible. That's not to mention those who may already be familiar with her Keeping Up With The Kardashian days, despite her now apparent desire to keep that past low key. They'll be watching the fashion shows, too – an altogether new, mass market for the brands. We have a feeling this only just the beginning.
