Louis Vuitton's 24 timezone-telling Escale Worldtime watch

A travellers best friend...

Earlier this winter, Louis Vuitton debuted its new Escale Worldtime watch – a timepiece that is the perfect wrist candy for the discerning traveller and boasts the ability to tell the time from all 24 timezones...

Of course the name 'Louis Vuitton' is almost synonymous with the word 'travel' – for many years its iconic trunks have been the luggage of choice to some of the world's most famous cultural icons. The house has long told its story, from a worldwide perspective – despite being a very French company.

Louis Vuttion's impressive Escale Worldtime watch draws on the history of the luxury French fashion house, whilst offering a completely novel reinvention of the distinctive features of a travel watch. In the digital age, where timezones are continuously crossed and blurred and the Internet provides a time of its own – 24/7 time, the new watch provides everything one needs, in a chic old-fashioned disguise: A wristwatch, with a high-tech twist – it provides the time for all 24 timezones.

The complex dial consists of three separate mobile discs, which can be adjusted by means of the single crown and are synchronised by an automatic calibre – developed and assembled by the La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton manufacture. The unique timepiece makes it easy for the wearer to determine the time in the zone represented by a particular city simply by glancing at the corresponding initials, and the minutes can be read underneath the yellow arrow indicating the hour in the reference city.

Each watch dial takes 50 hours for a craftsman to complete in the workshop dedicated specifically to this task within the La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton manufacture using miniature painting techniques and working with oil paint, over 30 colours are applied one-by-one with a paintbrush using tiny, successive strokes before the piece is dried in an oven heated to 100 °C.

The innovative piece is done in a polished, 18 carat white gold case, and a hand-stitched black alligator strap with a black calfskin lining and a white gold buckle. The vibrant hand-painted dial includes the names of different cities around the world and drew its inspiration from the monograms used on vintage Vuitton luggage – making it the perfect gift for the discerning traveller.
