Today we celebrate 73 years of Dior’s iconic Bar Jacket

An ode to an icon
In 1947, Christian Dior birthed an item that would eventually become *the* signature code for the maison...

Today, the term “fashion” falls under an umbrella of meanings: style, craftsmanship, identity, comfort, skill, art, and the list continues. The fast-paced industry was once a slow (yet thoughtful) process that allowed designers to successfully showcase their creativity and expertise, and in 1946, Christian Dior set the bar high for generations to come as to what he wanted fashion to stand for.

It wasn’t until February 12, 1947, though that he presented his first Haute Couture fashion show — forever cementing his legacy to a room filled with some of the world’s most influential personalities in the fashion industry.

Exemplifying his vision for womenswear, Dior introduced petite waists, gentle shoulders, exaggerated hips and sexy busts (in contradiction to the post-war utilitarian offerings), and took on a new shape that would eventually become of the most iconic designs of the house: the Bar Jacket.

A symbol of Parisian elegance, it was the Bar Jacket that eventually cemented Dior’s success. Today, it’s one of the most iconic designs of the maison and continues to exalt femininity, courtesy of its cinched waist, soft shoulders, basques accentuating the shape of the hips, and open neckline.

Every season, the fashion emblem is tweaked and modernised to fit the designer’s inspirations (for Fall/Winter ’19, Maria Grazia Chiuri designed the iconic Bar jacket in black granite tweed), and the cult piece rebirths with Dior’s beloved silhouette, expertise and exceptional savoir-faire.

Today, we celebrate 73 years of an icon.
