The Chanel Cruise 2014/15 Dubai Countdown
The travelling fashion show and its presentation locations past
Chanel's seasonal Cruise shows have become something of an institution within the fashion industry, leading the way for many brands to follow suit in recent times, plucking collections from their regular homes in New York, London, Milan and Paris – and travelling overseas to all manner of exotic locations.
Ahead of Chanel's next destination on the horizon being the Emirate of Dubai in five days time, Buro 24/7 Middle East reflects on the same number of past 'on location' Cruise extravaganzas by the brand, and where in the world they took place:
Cruise 2013/14: Singapore
A relatively low-key display for Chanel, that took place in a former colonial British army barracks, an aesthetic that is really quite opposite of the over-the-top opulence we are used to. The sporty collection was supported with by the debut of Once Upon A Time... a short film about Gabrielle Chanel starring Keira Knightley.
Cruise 2012/13: Versailles
Karl Lagerfeld had the sumptuous gardens of Versailles – around an hour outside of Paris and not usually open to the public – to play host in 2012, welcoming around 400 friends of the brand including Tilda Swinton, who arrived with Haider Ackermann, Vanessa Paradis and Sam Wood. The collection was Marie Antoinette/punk-inspired modelled by Cara Delevingne and Lindsey Wixson.
Cruise 2011/12: Cap d'Antibes
Decadence was the key and it was the turn of the French Riviera in 2011, when the Chanel party bus stopped at Cap d'Antibes. The venue, the Hotel du Cap, is, as the designer himself pointed out, is possibly the most expensive hotel in the world – and he booked out the whole place. A cast of top models accessorised the looks with real jewels, diamonds, and pearls, too.
Cruise 2010/11: Saint Tropez
Chanel brought the town of St Tropez to a standstill in 2010 for the presentation of its then Cruise collection, with a theme falling under 'big spenders'. The street outside the Sénèquier, the famous tearoom and pâtisserie at the port, became a makeshift catwalk and a brass band played Mungo Jerry's In the Summertime. Models arrived in a convoy of riva vintage cars, each upholstered in aquamarine, tan and white watched on by Vanessa Paradis, Diane Kruger, Elisa Sednaoui, Gaspard Ulliel and Anna Mouglalis plus more than 150 international press, all perched on Sénèquier's red director's chairs – whilst others watched from the decks of super-yachts, moored alongside.
Cruise 2009/10: Venice
It was five years ago that the action took place in Venice, with Lagerfeld deciding to show his Cruise collection in the sinking city – with looks directly inspired by Venetian high-society of the 1930s. That means to say, ultra elegant. Splashes of renaissance reds, the slim and luxurious gowns and cocktail dresses were dramatic, and an ever-so slightly Spanish flair occurred via ruffles and lace... Bellissima.
