A new name in fashion: Demestiks New York by Reuben Reuel
At just 28-years-old, Virginia-raised and now Brooklyn-based designer has managed to capture the wardrobe choice of none other than Beyoncé with his African print-inspired pieces that flatter a 'real' female figure. In other words, these clothes were made for curves.
By merging together bold prints and bright colours into silhouettes that suit, his portfolio includes skirts, shirts, rompers, jackets and dresses. In 2009, the young creative talent launched his own brand called Demestiks New York, and it's been attracting attention steadily ever since. Primarily sold on Etsy, the womenswear-only line is based on Dutch wax prints as well as other classic Africana patterns.
The connection to one of the most famous – and influential – people on the planet came by way of Reul's friend, who is a stylist to the star who said they would 'pull some pieces' for her, with no guarantee she would select them. And how did he take the news that she had not only done so, but posted the fact on her Instagram account (with nearly 15 million followers)? "When I found out she did and posted it online, I was driving and my friend in the car was checking Instagram and told me. I screamed and nearly got in a car accident." He says.
Reuben, we like your style.
