A new name in fashion: Phuong My
Ex-stylist turns designer
Vietnamese designer Phuong My is a promising new name among a cohort of Asian talent that has already conquered America.
Graduating from the University of Arts in San Francisco, in 2011 she took part in New York Fashion Week, after which she returned home to Vietnam where she worked as a stylist for the regional versions of Harper's Bazaar and ELLE. Now My has again returned to fashion design; successfully promoting her own label in her native Saigon.
In her new collection the designer flirts with sculptural silhouettes and employs the coveted idea of "eveningwear as daywear" – an evening wardrobe for everyday wear. My matches the evening mood with tight glossy duchesse satin, which she sews into skirts, coats and dresses. She also takes inspiration from Dior’s classic New Look, as well as the obvious influence of Cristobal Balenciaga, cleverly adapting the best historical fashion moments and making them modern.
