Lionel Messi has been named the Dubai Expo 2020's first global ambassador, a day after he secured a record fifth win at the Ballon d'Or awards. With over 80 million followers on social media, coupled with the fact that he's just been crowned world's best footballer, it was a natural decision to pick Messi. "Lionel Messi's performances on the football pitch bring people together, and as a result his influence reaches far beyond it," said Her Excellency Reem Ibrahim Al Hashimi, Director General of Expo 2020.

"He is the ideal person to be our first global ambassador," continued Al Hashimi. "He overcame youthful health challenges to achieve his dreams of international excellence through hard work; making him an inspiration. He is perfectly placed to reach out to young people around the world, bringing them together to join us as we work towards hosting our World Expo in 2020."

More Expo 2020 Global Ambassadors are expected to be announced soon and will include high-profile personalities from various fields including sports, arts, music and culture amongst many others.
