The 2018 Hugo Boss Prize Winner has just been announced

And the winner is...
The winner of this year's Hugo Boss Prize Winner title was recognised for her feminism-inspired works...

Every two years, the Hugo Boss Prize is given out to a contemporary artist recognised for their creativity, achievement and artistic works.  For 2018, six artists from around the globe made it to the finals, with only one winning the prestigious title.

Over the weekend, the Guggenheim Museum in New York held an intimate dinner to make the announcement with the finalists, the jury panel and prominent figures including Naomi Watts, Alexander Skarsgard, Chloe Wise and Cindy Bruna, all in attendance.

The winner receives USD$100,000 (approximately Dhs367,320) prize money and a solo exhibition held at the museum next April. This year, the award was given to New York-based sculptor and video artist Simone Leigh.

Most of her works (which includes a wide range of media such as installations, videos, performances and her signature sculptures) portray Leigh’s particular interests in African-American history and feminism.

According to the New York Times, a statement by the jury said: “Leigh has consistently expanded the possibilities of ceramics, which is her principal medium and one that has long been undervalued within the mainstream art world. “We are particularly compelled by Leigh’s longstanding and unwavering commitment to addressing black women as both the subject of and audience for her work.”

The other finalists included Teresa Margolles, Emeka Ogboh, Frances Stark, Wu Tsang and Moroccan artist, Bouchra Khalili.

Congratulations to the winner and the finalists!
