Sotheby's New York auctions to be streamed live on eBay

Yankees memorabilia is first up on the online block

Leading auction house, Sotheby's has announced that it will now stream auctions from its New York auction house live on eBay. The first lot up for auction is an appropriately New York themed Yankee Stadium themed lot...

Auctions at Sotheby's New York are to be streamed live on a new eBay platform, it has been announced. Starting the bidding will be a New York themed Yankee Stadium memorabilia lot.

Set to take place on April 1 the items up for sale will include the giant letters from the New York baseball stadium, which experts estimate could reach a final sale price of up to $600,000, among other artefacts from the infamous baseball stadium such as original photographs and memorabilia from hall-of-famer Reggie Jackson.

Sotheby's feel the new online platform is a good way to reach a new audience that "have the means to participate in a Sotheby's auction." However, evening sales of high-value artworks and other specialist items will be reserved only for the traditional auction format.

Whilst auction houses such as Sotheby's and its competitor Christies, have been conducting selected auctions online for some time, this new link between Sotheby's New York and eBay will connect the auction house with eBay's massive database of 155 million online users.
