Rihanna receives Harvard University Humanitarian of the Year Award
Musical artist and philanthropist
Rihanna was named the 2017 Harvard University Humanitarian of the Year for her outstanding philanthropic work. The singer founded the Clara Lionel Foundation and in May last year, launched a global grant initiative to allow students in several countries, including her hometown Barbados, the opportunity to achieve a degree. Harvard also noted that, "Rihanna has charitably built a state-of-the-art centre for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados."
During her acceptance speech, Rihanna said: "I know that each and every one of you has the opportunity to help someone else. All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return. To me, that is a humanitarian." Congratulations Riri!
