London's Royal College of Art will bring its secret postcards to Dubai's Art Week
The exhibition's first international appearance
Dubai has been selected by London’s Royal College of Art (RCA) as the very first international venue for it’s RCA Secret Dubai exhibition. The event will take place at next year’s Dubai Art Week, to coincide with its established London counterpart – RCA Secret.
Nearly 1,000 artists ranging from world class to up and coming, will create a one of a kind postcard sized piece ahead of the week-long fair. Artists may choose to paint, draw, sketch, photograph or even produce a 3D sculpture.
What makes this truly unique is that the postcards are displayed anonymously so buyers have the thrill of guessing which artist or designer has produced the work before they buy. For a mere 500AED this is an opportunity to own an item from a legendary artist – previous contributors include; Grayson Perry, Paula Rego, Julian Opie, David Bailey, Jeremy Deller, Sir James Dyson, Sir Paul Smith and Christopher Bailey. Not to mention a legendary artist in the making as students and alumni of the RCA will also be contributing their designs.
As a reflection of the thriving art scene in the UAE, local artists have also been invited contribute to the exhibition. “The flourishing art scene in Dubai is incredibly exciting,” Dean of the Royal College of Art’s School of Fine Art, Professor Juan Cruz said. “As we step outside London for the very first time, Dubai is the perfect place to bring one of the RCA’s most cherished and fruitful exhibitions.”
The proceeds will go to the college’s scholarship fund, helping talented students at formative stages in their careers, and also contribute to establishing and running RCA courses in Dubai, which will support emerging local talent. “Education has long been a key pillar of our non-commercial programming and we are thrilled to be working with RCA Secret, raising funds to develop the College’s International Scholarship Fund and RCA courses in Dubai,” said Antonia Carver, Fair Director, Art Dubai.
The exhibition and fundraising sale will run from March 16 – 21 2015 at A4 Space, Alserkal Avenue as part of Art Dubai’s Art Week
