Maria von Trapp, who's melodic family inspired 'The Sound of Music' has died at the age of 99 at her home in Vermont

The sad news of Maria von Trapp's death was announced yesterday by Von Trapp's brother, Johannes von Trapp, who says she passed away on Tuesday, calling her a "lovely woman who was one of the few truly good people".

The Trapp family's inspiring story was turned into the world famous film and broadway musical, The Sound of Music.

In 1942 the family moved to Vermont, USA, after visiting during a singing tour in the town of Stowe, where they opened and still operate a lodge there.

Maria von Trapp was the third child out of seven and second-oldest daughter in the family and was portrayed as Louisa in The Sound of Music.
