Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio – known for his keen passion for climate change issues – has been appointed as a official representative for the United Nations

The UN secretary general Ban ki Moon said in a statement that DiCaprio's global stardom and passion for protecting earth were the perfect combination to help face the global issue of climate change.

As the latest UN Messenger of Peace, DiCaprio joins Angelina Jolie, George Clooney and Emma Watson – who all have unique roles within the UN.

"I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history – it is a moment for action," DiCaprio said. "How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet."

DiCaprio's first official action for the UN will be to address the opening of the climate summit later this month in New York.
