A jacket tagged by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Stephen Sprouse sells at auction
An after-hours club called Danceteria was at the centre of New York's 80's underground art scene, frequently opening its doors to the likes of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys and a young Madonna. Rico Espinet, the stage manager and lighting director of the legendary venue from 1981 to 1986 had the shrewd foresight to ask a Danceteria elevator attendant to ask the celebrity guests and artists he encountered to leave their mark on his jacket.
Of the original artworks that feature on the jacket, the most impressive are the tags of the prolific graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and fashion designer and artist Stephen Sprouse. Fast-forward two decades and the jacket has achieved $9,100 at a recent auction sale.
