Watch now: The first official trailer for 'I Am Ali'
An intimate look into greatness
Say the name Muhammed Ali and you are unlikely to be greeted with a "who?" It's much more likely that the listener will instantly recall a dozen of Ali's infamous quotes and comical pre-fight trash-talk: "I'm so mean I make medicine sick" or maybe "If you even dream of beating me you'd better wake up and apologize." And of course, the fabled "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!"
In a new documentary – scheduled for release October 10 – Lewins offers a rare glimpse at Ali's life outside of the ring where he reigned champion. In a cruel twist of fate, the three time heavyweight champion with the witty fight talk to match, lost his voice and spark to Parkinson's disease, which he was diagnosed with in the early eighties. What is so lovely about Lewins' documentary is that is provides a voice, and sheds light on those lost years since he gradually declined from the disease. The documentary also features candid interviews with Ali's children, ex-wife, business manager, George Foreman, Mike Tyson and Marvis Frazier, son of Joe.
