Huang Yong Ping selected for Monumenta 2016
"A project that must remain artistic and popular"
The French citizenship holding artist makes large-scale, over-the-top fabricated structures and installations and Filippetti is said to have chosen him in attempt to bolster the reputation of Monumenta – after two disappointing editions of the event. It has not gone unnoticed that this year's commission by the Kabakovs has drawn just just 145,000 visitors – which is around half the attendance of the amazingly popular 2011 installation by Anish Kapoor.
Filippetti championed Ping "because his art, with its dreamlike qualities, is capable of striking viewers' imaginations," and thinks him the man for "a project that must remain artistic and popular." She added that he "has worked a great deal in public space, which will help him in confronting this magnificent space."
Two years ago Monumenta switched to a biannual schedule, in order to avoid conflicting with the Lyon Biennale.
