Forbes 400 richest people in America 2014 is released
Bill Gates leads for 21st year running
For the twenty-first year running, Forbes magazine has declared Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as the richest person in America – with a net worth of $81 million. The combined wealth of the 400 people listed is a whopping $2.29 trillion, an increase of $2.02 trillion from 2013's list. The average net worth of the 400 is $5.7 billion, which is the highest it has ever been, and again – an increase on last year's $5 billion average.
The runner up is Warren Buffett, the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc, who takes second place with a net worth of $67 billion. Oracle Corp co-founder Larry Ellison (who has just announced his retirement as chief executive) was listed as the third richest American, with a net worth of $50 billion, up $9 billion from last year.
Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been listed as the eleventh richest person. Zuckerberg's net worth has grown $15 billion since last year; and he is currently worth $34 billion. The social media mogul is also the biggest gainer on the list since 2013 and the third richest American in the tech business.
Forbes 400 2014 features a total of twenty-seven newcomers – Jan Koum ( number 62) of WhatsApp at $7.6 billion, Russ Weiner (number 249) of Rockstar Energy at $2.5 billion, Travis Kalanick (number 190) of Uber Technologies at $3 billion and Elizabeth Holmes the youngest woman on the list, and the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world.
The oldest billionaire is David Rockefeller Sr. (number 190), age 99, with a net worth of $3 billion. Google CEO Larry Page features on the number twelve spot with $31.7 billion, while his partner, Sergey Brin, is ranked number 13 with $31.2 billion.
