Breaking news: Britain is separating from the EU, David Cameron resigns
Celebrities pick sides
Britain has decided to leave the European Union. The referendum, popularly known as BREXIT, has been pencilled in ever since Prime Minister David Cameron won office in 2015, addressing the argument that Britain has lost its voice within the European group. Following the results today, David Cameron has resigned from his position.
Making an appearance with his wife, Samantha, Cameron said: "The British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected. There can be no doubt about the result. Across the world people have been watching the choice that Britain has made. I am very proud to have been Prime Minister of this country for six years. I have held nothing back," before continuing that he will not continue on in his current position. "I do not think I can be the captain to take the country to its next destination. In my view I think we should have a new prime minister in place by the start of the Conservative conference in October."
While every member of the British public has an opinion on the matter, celebrities too were using their influence to put their cases across, especially on social media. On one side of the fence, voting #REMAIN or #IN were English football icon David Beckham and wife Victoria. Beckham had taken to Facebook to share his thoughts, saying, "We live in a vibrant and connected world where together as a people we are strong. For our children and their children we should be facing the problems of the world together and not alone. For these reasons I am voting to Remain." Meanwhile Victoria opted to show her support via Instagram with a simple hashtag sign that says 'in'.
Other celebrities who were in favour of Britain staying with the EU included author J.K. Rowling, actors Idris Elba and Benedict Cumberbatch, models Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne and singer Rita Ora. On the other end of the spectrum, voting strongly for #BREXIT are actors Michael Caine and John Cleese, actress Elizabeth Hurley and Joan Collins, F1's Bernie Ecclestone along with other prominent celebrities.
The announcement was made today on Friday June 24, following polling on Thursday. Stay connected with Buro 24/7 Middle East as we bring more updates on BREXIT.
