Chirstie's to auction works from Essl Museum's private collection
The stakes are high for contemporary art
The pre-Frieze auction held by Christie's estimates the value of the 44 works at £60 million, and will feature art pieces from the giants of German post-war and contemporary art, such as Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke and Neo Rauch, as well as works from international artists including Cindy Sherman, Frank Stella, Louise Bourgeois and Morris Louis.
The carefully chosen selection was handpicked from the Essl Museum’s holdings of 7,000 works and will reflect the life and soul of the musuem’s collection – which has been put together by Agnes and Karlheinz Essl over a period of 50 years.
The sale will also hold two works by leading Austrian artists, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Maria Lassnig, which portray the Essl Museum’s long standing stature as the home of the greatest collection of Austrian contemporary art in the world.
