Tilo Schulz and Francesco Hayez

The 56th International Art Exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia kicks off with a special exhibition event for the Tilo Schulz exhibition that features restored 19th century works by Francesco Hayez...

German artist Tilo Schulz is exhibiting during the 56th International Art Exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia. He has created a whole new room installation, which references the recently restored lunettes of Francesco Hayez from the Palazzo Ducale (the Doges Palace) in Venice. Thanks to Louis Vuitton, in partnership with Muve Foundation, these art pieces are now jointly presented for the first time.

The lunettes painted feature figurative scenes about continents and oceans, the motif of which is Venice, which in 1819 when Hayez painted them, was a thriving trading centre at the heart of an expanding world. Originally intended to decorate the rooms of the stock exchange and chamber of commerce in circular segments, they were mounted as architectural arches under the ceiling, giving the viewer the feeling of being a small being in a wider world. Schultz adds to this artistic conversation with this rotating disc installation.

The exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton forms part of the programming of the Venice Biennale 2015 and will launch with a special event tomorrow before remaining open until mid October.
