Dubai wins the Expo 2020 bid
‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’
It has been announced by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris that Dubai has won the bid to host the Expo 2020. Beating Sao Paolo, Brazil, Izmir, Turkey and Yekaterinburg, Russia to host the mega event, this is a huge feat for our city – which will benefit tremendously in terms of politics, tourism, business, and the economy.
Dubai took 47.24% of the votes in the first round and joined Yekaterinburg and Izmir in the second round of voting (Dubai with 77 votes, Yekaterinburg 39 & Izmir 33). The second round saw Izmir being eliminated with Dubai increasing to a 52.73 percentage of the vote (87 votes).
Dubai's enthuiastic bid gained huged support regionally as well as from outside of the Middle East, with high profile celebrities such as Bill Gates saying that the city "would be a great location to host a World Expo" and Bill Clinton noting "Dubai's model of shared prosperity is more important today than ever and an inspiration to many countries in the Middle East."
