The inaugural edition of ‘21, 39’ Jeddah Art, debuts next month

Having made a distinct mark on the international art world, Jeddah, the cultural capital of Saudi Arabia, presents an initiative dedicated to preserving and presenting the country’s burgeoning cultural landscape

'21, 39' is a non-profit initiative created by the Saudi Art Council, who seek to promote the growing art and culture of their region, chaired by HRH Princess Jawaher bint Majed Al-Saud, founder of  Al-Mansouria Foundation.

The cultural capital of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah, will welcome a contemporary art event entitled '21,39' opening for the international art world on February 4-8. Taking its title from Jeddah's geographical coordinates '21,39', the four day exhibit will offer a exclusive experience of exhibitions, educational workshops, seminars and a unique program.

From the opening of the event, it's organisers aims are to expand beyond the current borders of the Kingdom's cultural landscape, developing a platform for dialogue between local artists and the rest of the world. There is an excessive amount of talent in this region - and it's time for it to start being seen. 

"The inaugural opening event of '21, 39' will be held from 4-8 February and aims to expand beyond the current borders of the Kingdom's cultural landscape, developing a platform for dialogue between local artists and the rest of the world by fostering the city as a vibrant and sustainable cultural destination for local, regional and international artists, patrons, visitors and art enthusiasts," said Mohammed Hafiz, Vice-Chairman of The Saudi Art Council and Co-Founder of Jeddah-based Athr Gallery.

One of the events key aims is to foster cross-cultural understanding through art. The initial program will present two curated exhibitions featuring works from emerging and established Saudi artists, special educational programs, a day of talks and panel discussions. As well honouring the career of Saffeya Binzager, one of the first Saudi artists to hold an exhibition in Saudi Arabia.

There will also be a book accompanying this initiative launched by Canvas Magazine and Mixed Media Publishing called 'Contemporary Kingdom'.
