Spotify have applied science to the art of the love song
With the help of a Professor in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience
Digital music pioneer Spotify has put together three playlists in honour of Valentines day, using a special formula that they have formatted with Jacob Jolij who is an assistant professor in cognitive psychology and neuroscience at the University of Groningen, one of the most prestigious and oldest universities in the Netherlands.
The new experiment has uncovered that the perfect formula for a love song = sentimental lyrics + slow temp + syncopated rhythm + major key + standard cord progression. For example the song performed by British singer Adele, 'Make You Feel My Love', is the perfect combination - and top of the list. Other artists include Marvin Gaye and Whitney Houston in second and third place, followed by songs such as 'Wonderful Tonight' by Eric Clapton and 'Love Me Tender' by Elvis.
