James Blake wins Mercury Music Award
Beating David Bowie
Yesterday 25-year-old James Blake won the coveted ‘Album of the Year’ award at the Mercury Music Awards in London. The musican beat music veteran David Bowie, describing the fact as“very strange” before taking home the £20,000 prize for his second album, Overgrown. Unfortunately confusion ensued when the host of the evening Lauren Laverne called Blake “James Blunt” on announcing his win.
Besides Bowie, Blake beat Foals, The Artic Monkeys, Laura Mvula, Disclosure, Laura Marling, Jon Hopkins, Savages, Jake Bugg, Rudimental and Villagers. The experimental artist joins previous Mercury winners PJ Harvey, The XX, Franz Ferdinand, the Arctic Monkeys, Portishead, Pulp, Antony and the Johnsons and the winner of last year's award, Alt-J.
