Bob Dylan's guitar at Christie's
A moment in rock and auction house history
December 6 at Christie's auction house marks a new moment in rock history: Bob Dylan's Sunburst Fender Stratocaster sold for a record breaking $965,000 - almost hitting the $1 million mark. This was the highest price ever paid for a guitar at an auction. Christie's was also offering some handwritten and typed out lyrics that were found in the guitar case - these however had a dismal turnout where only 1 of the 5 was purchased for a mere $20,000. All eyes were on the guitar.
The guitar is most famously known as the moment when Bob Dylan went from acoustic to electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. "His going electric changed the structure of folk music. The minute Dylan went electric, all these young people said: We are going electric to" explained the Newport Folk Festival founder Geroge Wein. The buyer of the guitar is unidentified.
