Pakistani comedians scoop gong at Gotham Awards
Plus Julianne Moore's golden moment
The annual Gotham Independent Film Awards are celebrating 25 years in the business, and this year's star-studded ceremony was held at the elegantly spaced Cipriani restaurant on Wall Street, New York City.
Hosted by cult series 'Broad City' duo Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, the celebration kicked off with the red carpet pre-show, followed by a star-studded awards ceremony. The Gotham Independent Film Awards are divided into 11 categories, including three new awards: Best Screenplay, Breakthrough Series – Long Form, and Breakthrough Series – Short Form. Cate Blanchett, Tina Fey and Rachel McAdams were all nomineated alongside Oscar favourites Brie Larson for her work in 'Room' and an ensemble in 'Spotlight'.
However, Pakistani comedians, Radhika Vaz and Nadia P. Manzoor stole the spotlight with their win for Breakthrough Series – Short Form with their 'Shugs and Fats' series. The once Dubai-based duo moved to the US to create the Muslim feminist cultural series, which sees two women strive to discover who they.
Others awarded on that night include Breakthrough Actor Mya Taylor for 'Tangerine', Best Actress Bel Powley for 'The Diary of a Teenage Girl' and Best Actor Paul Dano for 'Love & Mercy'. Career tributes were also made to Todd Haynes, Robert Redford and Helen Mirren who was awarded by A-lister Robert De Niro.
