New cinematic footage is here showcasing Abu Dhabi's sparse desert as the perfect backdrop for film

The highly-anticipated trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been released and it showcases Abu Dhabi's The Empty Quarter in a stunning spectacle of scenes. As well, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia are back, but so too are the dark forces and their minions. Joining the old crew are John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, both set to take centre stage with their meaty roles.

Abu Dhabi's Liwa desert was selected as the setting for the new planet in the series, Jakku. Furthermore, a recent video released on the movie's official Facebook page showed more of the desert's importance within the movie. The fully immersive video allowed viewers to control the viewing angle, a piece of technology on YouTube which has remained under the radar until Star Wars came along.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to hit theatres on December 18, 2015. 'Til then, may the force be with you.
