Dubai Municipality has announced that they are embarking on a mega-library project that will put literature at the forefront of Dubai's future. Named the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, the news comes after the President of the UAE His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2016 as the 'Year of Reading'.

"We have a literacy crisis in the Arab World and changing course to knowledge-based development means getting our youth reading," His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai

, wrote on Twitter following the President's declaration.

Early renderings of the library reveal that the new literary space will be shaped like an open book. Inside, seven storeys will house more than a million international books for an international community of all ages. Other notable features of the library include a dedicated web service, cinemas as well as an audio library.

Located in Al Jaddaf and covering an estimated 66,000sqm, the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is set to open in 2017.
