Saudi Arabia is raising the bar with Saudi Design Week, a platform offering participants a chance to explore design via discussions, workshops and more

Hot on the heels of Jeddah Art Week, Saudi Arabia is set to launch its first ever Saudi Design Week, boosting its reputation as a cultural hub. From February 9-15, the fair will host talks, exhibitions and workshops from regional and international participants. Buro 24/7 Middle East rounds up ten things to look forward to at the fair....


Introduction to Design in the Gulf | February 9

On the launch day of the first ever Saudi Design Week, a conference titled an 'Introduction to Design in the Gulf' will feature speakers HRH Princess Reema Bint Bandar, CEO of Alfa Group, Philip Hoffman, chief executive of The Fine Art Fund Group, Dr. Maha Senan, executive director of Saudi Heritage Preservation Society, and Cyril Zammit, fair director of Design Days Dubai, from 8.30pm-9.30pm.


To The Untitled Time | February 9

On the same day, Lam Art Gallery is set to reveal an exhibition 'To The Untitled Time' of Saudi Arabian artist Hussein Al Mohasen, at 6pm. 


Stenciling Kufi Workshop | February 12

The Lam Art Gallery will host a two day workshop 'Stenciling Kufi' on February 12 and 13. During the workshop, participants can study the architecture of the Square Kufi Script; from their understanding, each attendee will develop their own characterised set of letters.


Harvey Nichols Riyadh

Harvey Nichols Riyadh has a range of exciting events planned for Saudi Design Week, including daily screenings of Versailles 73 (11am and 1pm) in the VIP suite on the UG Floor. What's more, founder of Decades boutique, Cameron Silver, will open a pop up boutique on the UG floor at Harvey Nichols, presenting vintage fashion and accessories from the world's most coveted designers. He will also host a book signing at 7.30pm on February 11.


Entrepreneurship and the Design Process | February 10

On February 10, attendees can look forward to a talk on 'Entrepreneurship and the
Design Process', hosted by Cyril Zammit, fair director of Design Days Dubai,
Khalid Shafar, and Bader Al Hejailan, co-founder of THOUQ Shop.


Social Media for Luxury Brands Talk | February 10

Badeeh Abla, artist and creative director of Nobrand Agency will host a session from 7pm-7.30pm on February 10 offering his know-how in 'Social Media for Luxury Brands'.


Decades of Fashion | February 11

Fashion enthusiasts are in for a treat with 'Decades of Fashion', a discussion exploring a range of topics in the fashion industry taking place on February 11. The talk will be hosted by Cameron Silver, founder of a LA-based boutique Decades, alongside Deborah Riley Draper, film director of Versailles 73.


The Foundations of Creativity | February 11 

A panel discussion hosted by Banafsajeel founder Noor Al Dabbagh, Saudi artist Abdulnasser Gharem, Saudi photographer Faisal Al Malki and Saudi artist Manal Al Dowayan, exploring the development of the next generation of creatives. 


Culturally Led Designs Panel Discussion | February 13

As well hosting a seperate workshop, Alaa Balkhy, will take part in the 'Culturally Led Designs' panel on February 13 with Kholoud Attar, founder of Design Magazine, Najla'a Al Bassam, designer and founder Haya Design Studio, and Raneen Bukhari of Desert Designs.


Creative Cube Workshop | February 13

The Loft ME workshop will also host an event on February 13 called 'Creative Cube' - a hands-on workshop using wooden cubes to inspire creative thinking.
