Sculpting steel: A Bernar Venet showcase in Dubai
Debut solo exhibition
Custot Gallery Dubai is set to launch a new sculpture exhibition by French artist Bernar Venet. While his installations were part of the gallery's opening exhibition, this new show will mark the conceptual artist's first solo exhibition in the Middle East.
Having achieved the 'Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur' in 2005, Venet was awarded the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement Award, this year. His commissions have included installations around the world, from Berlin and San Francisco and from Tokyo to Beijing. As well, his vast oeuvre is on display at over 70 distinguished museums including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
For his exhibition in Dubai, Venet will showcase new works from his Arc, GRIB, Angle and Indeterminate Line series. However, the highlight will undeniably be a 6.5m steel installation within the gallery. Also on display will be a special acrylic on canvas work, Venet's tribute to Arabic culture.
Speaking about his work, Venet says: "Today I have much more freedom in my choice of subjects. I select them for their originality, for their remoteness, on the visual level, from anything, as far as I know, that other artists have ever painted," he continued.
Bernar Venet's first solo exhibition in the region will run from May 19 – July 30 at Custot Gallery Dubai, Al Serkal Avenue.
