A new retrospective on Samia Halaby's pioneering career in art, as well as a talk and book signing from the artist

Next month Ayyam gallery will present its new exhibition 'Samia Halaby: Five Decades of Painting and Innovation', - marking the first major retrospective of the renowned artist's work. Curated by art historian Maymanah Farhat, this comprehensive exhibition will feature over fifty works of art, representing every period of the artist's career and the many creative experiments and breakthroughs she has accomplished.

Samia Halaby  is a Palestinian artist who was born in Jerusalem in 1936 during the British Mandate, today she is recognised as one of the Arab world's leading contemporary artists. Her culture and childhood inspiring her throughout her creative journey.

The exhibit was inspired by the logic of the artist's recently re-released eponymous writings, 'Samia Halaby, Five Decades of Painting and Innovation', highlighting Halaby's principles of abstraction in nature utilising a materialist approach, her artworks range from paintings, drawings, prints, computer generated kinetic works, and hanging sculptures.

The visual culture of Palestine and its natural setting have also influenced her paintings, as has the urban dynamism of New York City (where the artists grew up and now resides). Her paintings over the last fifty years have served as the site of observation, and analysis with pre-modern forms of abstraction, mainly Islamic art, alongside the study of the lessons of seminal modern art movements-from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism.

Due to her recognition in both the contemporary Arab art scene and in the US-activist community, Halaby has been the subject of a number of art works by other artists, including the the 2008 film 'Samia' by Syrian filmmaker and conceptual artist Ammar Al Beik. Halaby is a pioneer of contemporary abstraction in the Arab world, she has remained a prominent figure in the region's art scene through numerous exhibitions, institutional collections, teaching residencies, and independent scholarship.
