London's Fashion Illustration Gallery's vintage Interview magazine exhibition
Up-and-coming celebrities of the 70s and 80s
In his hey day, artist Richard Bernstein made the up-and-coming celebrities of the 70s and 80s – such as Sylvester Stallone, Mick Jagger, Diane Lane, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Susan Sarandon – look sleek and glamorous, and some might say; forever young.
Appearing on the cover of Interview provided more than just "fifteen minutes of fame" a Warhol so famously said; it certified them and made their careers. The covers were designed in such a way that people would think that Warhol had created them himself, due to his signature being printed above the masthead.
Interview soon became iconic and Warhol would go on to autograph the covers of fans' copies, never dispelling the notion he had drawn the covers himself, "...Sometimes people think I do the cover of Interview. Well, I don't, I haven't the time. But Richard Bernstein's faces are wonderful. They're so colourful and he makes everyone look so famous..." said the icon himself.
The exhibition runs from Thursday August 7 until Saturday 24
