Cuadro Gallery's artist-in-residence Faig Ahmed
Weaving an intricate web of colour through Dubai's DIFC
On March 17, the Cuadro Gallery in Dubai's DIFC opened a special feature of new bodies of work by its most recent artists-in-residence Faig Ahmed and Olivia Arthur.
The residency programme at Cuadro operates in partnership with Fairmont The Palm, Dubai. Covering a duration of three-months, the gallery offers a select group of local and international artists accommodation and studio space in which to expand their creative practice.
Until April 6, the master of carpet weaving, Faig Ahmed will culminate his residency with an innovative exhibition featuring contemporary carpets and site-specific installations. His intriguing artworks include a 3D-piece that consists of woven carpet threads coming out of the gallery and into neighbouring buildings - leading walkers-by into his world of unique hand-crafted art.
Ahmed's work ties in the traditions of his homeland's carpet weaving techniques with the modernity of technological design and pattern-making. The Azerbaijani artist and nominee for the Victoria and Albert Museums 3rd 'Jameel Prize' has continued to reinterpret the traditional method of carpet design while adding his own unconventional touches of bold optical illusions - making his residency at Cuadro hard to miss.
Faig Ahmed's residency at Cuadro Gallery, Dubai will run until April 6.
