Art Dubai Projects announces the selected artists for 2015
Farideh Lashai, Jessica Mein, Jumana Emil Abboud and more...
The artists selected for the two distinct programmes: 'A.i.R Dubai' programme and the 'Art Dubai new commissions' programme have been announced. This year's line up includes a diverse list of UAE based artists whose disciplines range from photography, multimedia art and architectural research. Local artists are joined by an impressive list of equally diverse international artists.
The 'Art Dubai new commissions' programme is a new programme launching for the first time in 2015. It gives five regional and international artists the opportunity to develop dynamic site specific works for both the grounds of the fair and the city at large. All five commissions are developed with local and international partner organisations. This collaborative model allows the life and influence of the project to extend beyond the week of the fair, so the works can be exhibited for longer.
'A.i.R Dubai' is the residency programme and it is run by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority together with Tashkeel and Delfina Foundation. This three month programme sees six artists develop their projects for Art Dubai while in residence in the UAE, working together in studios, and taking part in an expanded outreach programme of talks, reading groups, screenings, publications and open studios.
"I have been working with both the residents of A.i.R Dubai and the commissioned artists to draw common threads in their work in order to find aesthetic and intellectual affinities," said Lara Khaldi, this year's curator of both programmes. She is an independent curator based between Ramallah and Amsterdam and the former assistant director for programmes at Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE (2009-11).
Artists selected for the 2015 programme include: Jumana Emil Abboud, Rheim Alkadhi, Maria Thereza Alves, Mehraneh Atashi, Fari Bradley and Chris Weaver, Mehreen Murtaza and the collective Umashankar and the Earchaeologists.
Notable selecees hailing from the UAE include: Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim, Hind Mezaina; Sharmeen Syed and Jessica Mein.
