When it comes to accessorising, decoration is key for the season ahead, think headbands, barrettes, ribbons, floral adornments and more

Guido Palau, hairstylist extraordinaire and permanent fixture backstage at a number of fashion runway shows created many an accessory too, for the season ahead. He is the brains behind the beautiful beauty looks at Dolce & Gabbana – generously enhanced by artificial flower stems, hairpins with precious stones, and a smattering of rustic golden coins. Palau proved completely unafraid to "overdo" things, and the models were balanced by natural spring make-up and hair tucked away in a bun, resulting in a collection that looked utterly romantic and girly.

The creations became even more confident at Valentino, where Guido added soft leather bands decorated with golden metal rivets and coins. The look were completed by a centre partings and low ponytails, with the stylist explaining, "these girls are very beautiful, but look more strict and severe than usual."

On the whole, SS14 paid more attention to jewellery than ever, it also shone through at Elie Saab, Anna Sui, Alexis Mabille, Tanya Taylor, Zac Posen, Honor and many others.

And thanks to such authoritative names backing the concept, the idea of decorating one's head seems less of a creative stretch than usual. Plus, those leather headbands add an edgy and dark touch to all manner of feminine attire, meaning they are surprisingly versatile, too – even ultra feminine Vera Wang contributed to the cause.

Adding to the mix is famed hairstylist Sam McKnight, who is regularly charged with work on shows such as Chanel, Fendi and others. The creative talent feels so strongly for the trend, he has even launched a floral-themed hair accessory collection of his own, together with designer Vicki Sarge.

Of course it wasn't long before the runway looks were mirrored on the red carpet. See for yourself some of those who have paid attention to this trend so far... And make your effort to join them soon.
