"Our skin care is an anti-dote to the lifestyles we live" – Aesop's Dr. Forbes
Exclusive to Buro 24/7 Middle East
W hen it comes to skincare, Australia is edging ever closer to the forefront of the industry, with one brand in particular, a clear frontrunner: Aesop. Known for their achingly cool packaging — think brown bottles and aluminium tubes — and core natural ingredients coupled with science, this brand from Downunder, is worth buying for your beauty box. Here, we speak exclusively to Aesop's General Manager of Products and Research Development, Dr. Kate Forbes about their latest product launch, coping with the Middle Eastern climate and how to fix a blemish asap...
The natural skincare industry is thriving at the moment. Where does Aesop sit within this parameter?
We sit with scepticism for the broad definition of natural skincare that has defined this area as this does not accurately represent what our formulations offer. It is true that since 1987 Aesop has been fascinated by and formulated products using rigorously selected botanical ingredients at their base. However, in our formulations these are combined with man-made or modified ingredients to provide overall the highest safety, quality and efficacy.
This month, you've just launched the Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Hydrating Cream. Tell us about the benefits...
Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Hydrating Cream is a potent, highly nourishing cream containing carefully balanced emollient botanicals and anti-oxidant rich ingredients to fortify the skin and leave it feeling soft and supple. It delivers supreme hydration and protects the skin from free radical damage.
The weather in the Middle East is humid, will it suit the climate?
Some may find Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Facial Hydrating cream too rich and heavy to be used outside in the hot and humid Middle Eastern weather. So we advocate using it at night or in air conditioned environments, where free radicals are prevalent and the skin can benefit from intense hydration to counter the dehydration. It is also ideal for use in the aircraft, while travelling to cooler climates or on the slopes in Europe between December and March.
You've woken up on an important date with blemishes. What do you do?
Combine your daily cleanser with two teaspoons of face masque massage into the face and leave on for as long as possible before entering the shower. Wash off and apply Aesop Control, reapplying several times across the day. Control is a clear gel that can be discretely reapplied throughout the day to help reduce inflammation and appearance of blemishes without drying out the skin. This product can also be effectively applied as you feel signs of an approaching blemish.
OUR SKIN CARE IS AN ANTI-DOTE TO THE LIFESTYLES WE LIVE.
Aesop has been around for decades. Why is it now the go-to skincare brand internationally? What has catapulted the brand into the international spotlight?
This is not something that has just happened, even 29 years on our approach remains consistent and is respected by our clients. We have always formulated to meet the needs of the skin across a global audience and elevate customer thinking to skin health. We create products with the urban customer in mind — they are busy, they travel a lot, sleep little, they frequently expose their skin to changing and often challenging environments.
What's something people don't know about Aesop?
Aesop's head office, located in Melbourne, Australia, is a purpose built laboratory where all of our product formulations are developed by our team of in-house research chemists. Our packaging serves a functional purpose and the investment is always placed on the ingredients we choose to use.
