The best of Cannes 2014 beauty
The freshest faces on the French Riviera
Every May, all eyes turn to the French Riviera as the annual Cannes Film Festival kicks off. And what would a film festival in the South of France be without a slew of glamorous parties, places and people? From its grand opening and closing ceremonies to its outstanding roster of film premieres and numerous dazzling parties, the festival provided the flashiest cinematic runway for Hollywood's best, and of course their hair and makeup was perfectly on point.
If there was one moment that captured the spirit of the festival's best beauty looks, it was Blake Lively sweeping down the red carpet at the premiere of Captives in a show-stopping black and white Gucci gown. The actress traded in her signature tousled locks and neutral make-up for an elegant, sleek bun and a classic red lip – it came after a more neutral, albeit just as beautiful, look on the opening night for the screening of Grace of Monaco.
Of course, nothing works quite like a pair of bold and bright lips to complement the occasion, and the deep crimson and berry shades spotted on the likes of Amber Heard, Adriana Lima, Cara Delevingne, Adele Ekzarkopulos and Léa Seydoux did all the talking. Zoe Saldana, Eva Green, Natasha Poly and Freida Pinto placed all emphasis on their eyes and opted for dramatic eye shadow and thick washes of mascara.
For a lesson in minimalism, one only needs to refer to Naomi Watts, Uma Thurman, Cate Blanchett, Marion Cotillard and Juliane Moore, who proved that less can definitely be more. All seemed to agree that sometimes the best approach to truly dazzle on the red carpet is to keep the face dewy and minimal.
One thing is for certain – Cannes is the place for debuts and some stars took note, taking advantage of the event to reveal dramatic new updates to their looks. Screen siren Monica Bellucci chopped her fringe in between premieres, and Léa Seydoux debuted a fiery red mane.
