Stella McCartney and Adidas are giving back for breast cancer awareness month

Fashion does good
McCartney’s sports line debuts the first post-mastectomy sports bra for survivors of breast cancer…

Stella McCartney might be known as an ethical pioneer when it comes to fashion sustainability, her stance on environmental responsibility stemming long before recycled or upcycled ever became a hashtag, but she’s also managed to transform the aesthetics of women’s performance sportswear with her Adidas by Stella McCartney line.

Both functional and innovative, the powerhouse collaboration between the brands has resulted in an energetic collection that features everything from zip-up performance jackets to high-performance leggings and activewear that is just as sleek off the court as it is on it.

This October, the brand continues to push the boundaries in women’s sportswear with the launch of the first ever post-mastectomy sports bra in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Created in partnership with Monica Harrington, a London-based lingerie stylist who works with women who have had mastectomy surgery, the new Adidas by Stella McCartney bra is designed to help breast cancer survivors introduce sport and fitness back into their lives.

“I really wanted to encourage women to take care of their health through wellness and self-care,” says McCartney, a passionate advocate for breast cancer education and awareness ever since losing her mother to the disease back in 1998. “This bra allows us to support recovering patients through the next phase of their journey, and hopefully give them the confidence to get back into training. It has a cool and modern look that will help motivate the wearer, as well as assuring them, they are not odd one out in the gym.”

Specifically constructed with unique design features that cater to the needs of post-surgery women, the sports bra shape is designed to prioritize comfort and support through strategic seam placement to avoid areas prone to sensitivity due to surgical scarring. A front zipper allows for easy closure when dressing and undressing, while hidden soft inner front pockets allow prosthetics to remain firmly secured during high intensity workouts.
