Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga and more hand over their Instagram accounts to leading black female figures

There's a new social media campaign set to support the Black Lives Matter movement...

Celebrities in Hollywood are coming together to further seek justice against the brutal killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. Whether it’s taking their voices to the streets, bringing their children to protest for justice and holding up some of the most powerful signs, a handful of prominent figures are doing more to educate their followers.

Selena Gomez and Lady Gaga are two names continuing to support the Black Lives Matter movement by inviting empowering black female figures and anti-racist organisations to take over their Instagram accounts to amplify black voices to reach millions of followers directly.

On the social media platform, Gomez (who lent her Instagram to Alicia Garza, Co-creator of Black Lives Matter and one of the Founders of Black Futures Lab) wrote: “I have been struggling to know the right things to say to get the word out about this important moment in history. After thinking about how best to use my social media, I decided that we all need to hear more from Black voices. Over the next few days I will be highlighting influential leaders and giving them a chance to take over my Instagram so that they can speak directly to all of us. We all have an obligation to do better and we can start by listening with an open heart and mind.”

On the other hand, Gaga shared a post in which she announced that she will give over the Instagram account to the organizations including ‘Loveland Foundation’, ‘Black Lives Matter’, ‘Campaign Zero’, ‘Marsha P. Johnson Institute’, and others.

“Starting tomorrow, I’m giving over my Instagram account to each of the organizations I’ve recently donated to, in an effort to amplify their important voices. And after I vow to regularly, in perpetuity, across all of my social media platforms, post stories, content, and otherwise lift up the voices of the countless inspiring members and groups within the Black community.”

Several actresses and musicians have also joined in the social media campaign (titled #sharethemicnow) including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kourtney Kardashian, Diane von Furstenburg, Ashley Graham, Julia Roberts and many more.

The initiative will also allow those organizations to hold Instagram Live sessions and give opportunity to post important information on the protest.
