SHARJAH’S FLYING SAUCER SHORTLISTED FOR AGA KHAN AWARD

The city's famous architectural landmark has been shortlisted for Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2022...

If there’s one thing the UAE is known for, it’s the architecture – all of which come together to complete a country that feels both contemporary and timeless. It truly is a commendable feat that infuses heritage with the latest technologies and modern design principles throughout architecture and it’s no surprise that Sharjah’s very own architectural landmark, The Flying Saucer, has been shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2022.

The Flying Saucer is one of 20 projects that have been shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and is in the running to compete for a share of the US$1 million prize, one of the largest in architecture. The city’s Brutalist-style 1978 building originally housed a café, restaurant, newsstand and gift shop before being fully restored as a community art space, contributing to Sharjah’s collective cultural direction.

Joining 19 other shortlisted projects that were selected by an independent master jury, the country’s Flying Saucer is amongst those chosen from 15 other countries including Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Palestine, Indonesia and Turkey.
