Facebook's Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets to ship in 2016
Virtual reality becomes a reality
The hype and speculation surrounding the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift, has finally come to an end, following the announcement that the headsets will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2016. The company, which was bought by Facebook in 2013 for $2 billion has already garnered huge hype for the gaming device.
Oculus Rift VR vice president of products, Nate Mitchell, made the announcement via Twitter saying: "Extremely excited to announce that the Oculus Rift will be shipping Q1 2016! We can't wait to get it in your hands." A further statement on the company's blog said that more details will be forthcoming regarding the technical components and full spec and capabilities of the device.
The headset will certainly have some healthy competition on the virtual reality market going up agains Sony's Morpheus VR headset among others. Whilst gaming is the primary motivation for designing the devices, and will certainly be the driving force behind the first wave of sales (Sony's Morpheus has been designed specifically for the PlayStation 4) developers are working on education, occupational therapy and film making.
We wait to hear about other competitor's plans to release virtual reality devices, rumour has it that Apple has something in the pipeline. Stay tuned to Buro 24/7 Middle East for all of the latest developments as they happen...
