The UAE's judoka Sergiu Toma claimed the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics after defeating Italy's Matteo Marconcini in the Men's 81kg category. The win marks the UAE's second Olympic podium win after shooter Sheikh Ahmed bin Hasher's gold victory at the Athens Games in 2004. Toma, originally born in Moldova, is ranked ninth in the world and overcame his semi-final defeat to Russia's Khasan Khalmurzaev to earn his place in the UAE history books.
