Female Omani tennis star, Fatma Al Nabhani, headlined at the Nike International Women's Day celebrations yesterday, at the new Nike women-only store at Box Park in Dubai. The event shone a spotlight at the achievements of women in sport, hence Al Nabhani's inspiring presence, and also galvanised more young women in the region to set out achieving their sporting and fitness goals, with new initiatives.

Fatma Al Nabhani's journey to success as the only professional tennis player from the Arab region has been documented in a short film by Poppy De Villineuve (video above), which screened at the Nike event. It revealed the dedication involved in her rise to athletic prominence, and the obstacles involved in training in a community where there were no fellow female players to team up and train with. Speaking of her enthusiasm for Nike's initiatives for growing the athletic community for women in the area she said:

"I'm very honoured to be here today at Nike's first women's focused store in the region to celebrate this important day...The choices and access for women who love sport and fitness are better than ever. Now is our time as Arab women to shine in the world of sport and fitness and reach new heights."

Nike took the timely opportunity to launch the Nike+ Women-Only Run Club, a free, weekly gathering every Monday, where women can gather in the spirit of community and camaraderie and support each other whilst having fun running and getting fit.

In further efforts to elevate sporting opportunities and awareness for women in the region are the N+TC (Nike+ Training Club) classes, which are being held at Engine Health and Fitness and led by Nike Master Trainers in Dubai. The N+TC Tour is also coming to the UAE for the first time, and will see those who sign up take on an epic workout experience.
