Celebrated Emirati designer and friend of Buro 24/7 Middle East, Khalid Shafar, presents his first international interactive public space installation as part of Shubbak 2015 in London's Chelsea – 'The Nomad.' The public seating installation, was initially born during the development of Shafar's recent The CITY's Bench creation for D3, Dubai Design District:

"It came up again in conversation with Shubbak's Artistic Director Eckhard Thiemann in November...When he saw the drawings, he immediately thought it could work within Shubbak's theme for 2015 – Art in the Public Realm – which examines how London is host to cultural diasporas who have sought refuge over the centuries."

The creation uses thermally modified ash, and the design was inspired in part by the influences of heritage and ancient themes, within modern architecture. "It's very prestigious to have the premiere of 'The Nomad' in a city like London and in a relevant context such as Shubbak. It is one of their key projects and they have secured a great location for its presentation."

The Nomad is still in the process of construction, but take a look at these artist sketches and digital renderings by Shafar below...
