Revealed: The biggest health food trends of 2019

Here's what we've all been eating this year
Just a fashion has trends, so too does food. Here's what you'll be eating next year...

It seems that pictures of food are almost as popular of snaps of fashion on Instagram — just think, how many colourful acai bowls in your feed this year so far?

And now it seems there’s a new round of food trends that are set to hit our screens (and stomachs) in 2019. American supermarket chain Whole Foods has revealed its predictions for next year’s shopping lists and they include everything from new Pacific Rim Flavours to avocado ice cream and coconut butter-filled chocolates.

Here are some of our favourite upcoming trends…

Pacific Rim Flavours

Asia, Oceania and the western coasts of North and South America are key focuses for our palettes next year with Whole Foods predicting that as a result of the rise of acai and smoothie bowls, we’ll be seeing a whole lot more tropical fruits including guava, dragon fruit and passionfruit.

Shelf-Stable Probiotics

People are more conscious than ever about what they’re eating which is why wellness-focused brands are adding better ingredients to staple foods including products like granola, oatmeal, nut-butters, soups and nutrition bars.

Fine Fats

Off the back of the keto and paleo movements of 2018, next year will see a rise in interest in good fats. New integrations of fat sources such as keto-friendly nutrition bars crafted with MCT oil powder, coconut butter–filled chocolates and a new wave of ready-to-drink vegan coffee beverages inspired by butter coffees, are coming up on the food scene.

Eco-Conscious Packaging

According to Whole Foods, “Some companies are making commitments to ban straws, while brands like Whole Foods Market are setting up regional pilots to test recyclable strawless, sipper lids made from PET, without increasing the plastic content of a lid/straw combination.”

Trailblazing Frozen Treats

There’s going to be plenty more frozen treats to choose from on the shelves including new flavours of ice cream (avocado, hummus, tahini and coconut water among them) and plant-based frozen desserts like CocoWhip Soft Serve.

Marine Munchies, Beyond Seaweed

We’ve heard of seaweed chips and snacks before but it seems that more sea greens are being incorporated into our dishes such as seaweed butter and kelp noodles.
