Loewe has injected their Spanish history with an international art initiative. Buro 24/7 Middle East has the details on the competition that is set to change the creative landscape...

Luxury Spanish brand Loewe has announced a new annual arts programme, the LOEWE Craft Prize. The global initiative is designed to showcase the works of modern craftsmen who can reinterpret traditional artisanship with contemporary touches. "Craft is the essence of Loewe," explains Loewe's Creative Director Jonathan Anderson. "As a house, we are about craft in the purest sense of the word. That is where our modernity lies, and it will always be relevant."

Citing craft as an inspiration, Anderson hopes the Loewe Craft Prize will provide an avenue for artists to showcase their hand-worked pieces, be it in ceramics, basket-weaving, furniture designing or jewellery-making. "In reality, there is nothing harder than finding a way to make an object that has a formula of its own and speaks in the maker's own language, creating a dialogue that didn't exist before."

Awarded to a piece that is not only aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound, the winning submission must also be relevant to today's modern context. The winner, who will receive a cash prize of Dhs200,000, will be announced in April 2017 and the winning piece will become apart of a global touring exhibition, beginning in Madrid in May 2017. The competition is open for submissions from April 12, 2016 until November 7, 2016. To enter visit
