Khalid Shafar, one of the UAE's most esteemed designers, is unveiling his latest design piece at Milan Design Week 2015. A collection of three unique rugs entitled Puzzle. The collection was woven from 100% pure wool, in Afghanistan, the place from which Shafar drew his inspiration for the design, as well as inspiration for a social initiative to accompany the collection.

The rugs were woven in collaboration with the Fatima Bint Mohamed Bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI) a social initiative dedicated to provide women in Afghanistan with employment and to offer them and their families critical social services in healthcare and education. A fitting collaboration that pays homage to the rich cultural history that inspired the puzzle design, which allows any rug to correlate next to any other of the collection, giving the puzzle pattern motif the feel of a cyclical journey, like that of the Mauri Gul motif, that relates to the nomadic traveller, returning to his starting point.

The rugs were woven in the Afghani Chapat weaving style, and Shafar intentionally left design blanks in the pattern, encouraging the Afghani women to fill in the blanks with own interpretations of the signature style, to which they can relate.
