What to see, and what to do at this year's Sole DXB lifestyle fair
Running from November 14–15
Showcasing some of the world's newest collaborations, streetwear trends and regional talent, Sole DXB will be bringing urban culture to the city of Dubai. Happening over a two-day period – November 14 and 15 – in a tailor-made pop up space at D3, the UAE's culture enthusiasts will be able to see and buy the latest in footwear, streetwear, art, literature and more. As well as viewing unique showcases in music, street art and basketball.
Sole DXB will provide an alternative platform for brands and artists to launch their latest creations and promote urban culture in the Middle East, promising that this year's fair will be the biggest event they have ever held. So expect all things cool, alternative and new....And don't forget to wear your coolest kicks, while Buro 24/7 Middle East highlights what to see and do over the two-day event:
The Buro 24/7 x Wissam Shawkat Collaboration
After a recent collaboration with Hermès, Buro 24/7 Middle East will present Dubai-based Wissam Shawkat, one of the top calligraphic artists in the world, at this year's Sole DXB. The self-taught artist – who's work is recognised and collected by connoisseurs all over the world – will be creating a piece live for the event's visitors over the two days. Creating a large mural on canvas in his Al Wissam style of classical Arabic lettering infused with a contemporary flair.
The Participating Brands
With over 50 streetwear brands showcasing their apparel at Sole DXB, we have broken down some of the names to look out for, as well as who will be in Sole's first 'Early Retirement' concept store. Major brands at this year's fair include Vans, Diesel, DC, Level Shoe District, Reebok Classics, Puma and Ray-Ban while Sole DXB will also be showcasing unique concepts such as Corcel presenting bicycle manufacturers BikeID and Barcelona-based Dosnoventa.
A large part of this year's Sole DXB will be the launch of Sole's very-own 2,000 square foot concept space, which will be selling a selection of curated goods including sneakers, apparel and contemporary art. Labels to look out for are Amsterdam-based footwear Filling Pieces label Saturday's NYC, B-Side by Wale, Made by Native, Black Sea, Dubai-based L'Afshar, Daily Paper, Olaf Hussein and many more.
Seven of the brands participating will also be holding their own trunk shows and highlighting Dubai’s creative talent, including Amongst Few, WekaFore, Juniors Be Junior, Levier, House of Nomad and Army Of 1.
This year at Sole DXB, a plethora of footwear labels and high-end labels will all fall under one roof, from Vans, Reebok to Rick Owens and Common Projects, there will be something for everyone's soles.
Specially created for Sole DXB, Puma will present 'Puma Select'; a premium lifestyle collection that fuses performances with culture and fashion by revisiting Puma's rich archives. The sports label has now partnered with some of the most influential streetwear labels in the world to offer unique Autumn/Winter 14 collections from Brooklyn We Go Hard, Sophia Chang, House of Hackney, and Mihara Yasuhiro, as well as the Ronnie Fieg x Puma Disc Blaze 'Coat of Arms' collaboration.
Level Shoe District will be offering a more glamourous side to the footwear scene with its own pavilion that will showcase Spring/Summer 15's most innovative sneakers, featuring limited editions, capsule collections and exclusive partnerships – which include Raf Simons' for Adidas and Joshua Sanders.
The event will also see the arrival of new brands to the Middle East, such as the Venice-made, Golden Goose Deluxe Brand created by Alessandro Gallo, whose footwear has a signature skate-style aesthetic, with the detail of a star on the sides and Gourmet Footwear, a high-end sneaker brand designed by New York-based Greg Lucci.
And, for all the sneakerheads out there, Sole DXB will be hosting a sneaker swap sponsored by 'iSneaker', as Sole has scoured through the UAE to find the region’s biggest sneaker collectors. A tradition in sneaker culture, the collectors will be able to exhibit their unique collections and be able to trade with other collectors for sneakers at the same “value”.
An urban street fair would not be complete without some art on the walls, that's why Sole will be providing the perfect canvas for a few famous street artists, including Remi Rough, who has been making images for more than a quarter of a century. Starting his career in colourful artworks in 1984, Rough's art began on the sides of the walls and trains in South London, and now, the talented artist will be creating a mammoth-sized mural at Sole DXB, as will Tava aka Antoine Tavaglione, a Canadian Pop artist, muralist and illustrator.
Dubai-based creative studio Robot & Spark will also be unveiling a new range of art. And, don't forget to come and say "hi" to Buro 24/7 Middle East and Wissam Shawkat as he paints his mural.
*The three art murals by Wissam Shawkat, Remi Rough and Tava will take place at different areas of the D3 Sole DXB site on November 14 and 15 from 13:00pm onwards on both days.
